Tristan scrunched up his eyes and concentrated as hard as he could. His inability to change into his demon form frustrated him. He gave himself a rueful smile in the bathroom mirror at the thought. He’d done everything he could to avoid facing the demon, and now he finally needed to do so, he couldn’t.

He knew, of course, Alastor would be more than capable of altering his appearance for him, by breaking down the barriers in Tristan’s mind, but Alastor would also want to know why Tristan wanted to be in his demon form.

Tristan was well aware of the fact Alastor would not want him going down to the Underworld without him, but he was a little tired of being treated like a child. Ever since the transformation, he had been almost constantly watched by his lovers. The only times they left him alone was when they both went out of the flat on one errand or another. He couldn’t really blame them for keeping him under close surveillance. He still cringed when he thought of his first exploration out on his own after becoming an incubus. The all-consuming lust had sent him running back home at a sprint.

That particular episode had triggered the almost constant and stifling supervision by his lovers. Tristan had always been independent and he wanted to do something to clear up his own mess, without Alastor and Mac having to set things right.

Cody was a prisoner in the Underworld because of him. Mac and Alastor had assured him there was plenty of blame to go around, but Tristan knew Cody wouldn’t have become involved at all if Tristan hadn’t picked him up.

He had to make sure Cody was all right. He didn’t think Mac or Alastor would really be bothered about the idea of checking on the human, but he knew they would insist on Alastor accompanying him.

Tristan didn’t know whether he wanted to prove himself or was simply rebelling against the constraints of his lovers, but whatever the reason, he’d made the decision to go to the Underworld and visit Cody alone. The problem was his uncooperative demon form didn’t want to show itself.

He poured himself a glass of water and took a long swallow. “Okay, Tristan, let’s try this again.”

Calmer and more relaxed, Tristan leaned on the edge of the counter and tried to imagine his demon form appearing in the mirror before him. “Horns, teeth, hooves,” he muttered. “Come on!”

When he opened his eyes, he saw he had failed once again. He glanced down at his bare feet and saw the usual ten toes. The nails on his hands had not extended into claws, his incisors were the same length as always, and there was not so much as a bump on his head where the horns should be.

“Damn it!” he swore as he banged his fist down on the counter.

For a moment he didn’t register the pain. Then he realized his anger had triggered something within him and his nails had extended into claws, cutting into the palm of his clenched hand.
